University of Bologna
Paolo Melchiorre received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Bologna (UNIBO) in 2003 under the supervision of Achille Umani-Ronchi and P.G. Cozzi. During his doctoral studies, he also worked with Prof. Karl Anker Jørgensen in Denmark. After postdoctoral research with Giuseppe Bartoli, he became Assistant Professor at UNIBO in 2007.
In 2009, he joined the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ) as an ICREA Professor and Group Leader. Since 2022, he is Professor of Chemistry at the University of Bologna.
His research focuses on asymmetric catalysis, photochemistry, and sustainable synthesis, combining visible-light activation with radical and biocatalytic strategies. Paolo has received multiple awards, including the “G. Ciamician” and “G. Modena” Medals (Italian Chemical Society), the RSEQ Prize for Scientific Excellence, the RSC Pedler Award, and the Linceo Prize for Chemistry. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) and Associate Editor of Chemical Science.
He has received four European Research Council (ERC) grants: Starting (2011), Consolidator (2016), Proof of Concept (2019), and Advanced (2024, “PHOTOZYME”).
Paolo has published over 150 papers, and delivered more than 350 invited lectures.
